Smaller creatures, like gaunts, are "connected" mentally to larger creatures that act as synapse nodes of sorts.

There's an interesting way in which the Tyranid hive mind thing works. Tyranids come in all shapes and sizes, but at the lower levels are the dumb grunts. If one Tyranid sees you, they all know you're there. They are also a bit like the Borg in Star Trek in that they operate as a hive mind of sorts. They strip a planet bare by eating much of the organic matter, but they also can mutate the vegetation to basically make more Tyranids. They're basically a force of nature not unlike a swarm of locusts, but the Tyranids devastate entire worlds. The Tyranids are an insect-like alien race unlike any other in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. THQ gave us a sneak preview shortly before the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany to show off the Tyranids in action, as well as a bit more of the Space Marine campaign that is at the heart of the real-time strategy game.

Now that THQ and Relic have announced the Tyranid race in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, we can finally talk about the faction in detail.
